On April 15, 2023, a war broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces militia as a result of disagreements that arose between army leaders and the leader of the Rapid Support Forces militia over the process of integrating his forces within the army structures.
The war quickly spread to all parts of Sudan, and it has caused widespread death and destruction. According to the United Nations, more than 4,000 people have been killed and more than 2 million have been displaced from their homes.
The Rapid Support Forces militia is a powerful armed group that is closely aligned with the Sudanese government. The militia has been accused of numerous human rights abuses, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and ethnic cleansing.
The following are some of the media and international reports that have documented the violations and crimes of the Rapid Support Forces militia:
-
- A report by the Amnesty International (amnesty.org) found that the Rapid Support Forces militia has been responsible for a “pattern of gross human rights violations” in Sudan, including “arbitrary arrests and detentions, torture, sexual violence, and the destruction of property.”
- A report by the Enough Project, a Washington-based advocacy group, found that the Rapid Support Forces militia has been responsible for “ethnic cleansing” against the Nuer and other ethnic groups in South Sudan.

The ongoing civil war in Sudan is a serious humanitarian crisis that is having a devastating impact on the Sudanese people. The international community must take action to end the war and hold the perpetrators of human rights abuses accountable.
The Rapid Support Forces militia is besieging citizens in their residential areas, preventing them from accessing electricity, communication networks, food and medicine. This is in addition to the forced displacement of residents of several areas in Khartoum and Darfur states in western Sudan
